Dog Aging, How Old is your dog?

We all know that a dog is older than it looks. There has always been a general rule of knowledge that for every year old a dog is, it is seven years older in human years. This rule of thumb is not quite accurate. Think of it this way, a dog that is one year old is able to breed and give birth to puppies.

Because of this simple fact, it has been determined that when a dog is a year old, it is the equivalent of a 15 year old in human years.

When a dog reaches the age of two he is exactly 24 in human years. No need to be alarmed on these facts, your dog is not aging drastically before your eyes.

The human age range comparison drops after the age of two. The years after a dog's second birthday start adding only four years to every year. For example, a three-year-old dog is equal to 28 in human years; a four-year-old is 32, a five-year-old, 36, a six-year-old, 40--and so on.

Now, how do you figure out a dog's age if it is unknown? Here are some techniques vets use to get an idea of how old a dog is.

They check their teeth. Dogs have a set of permanent teeth by their seventh month. If the canine you've come across has clean, bright, white teeth he is likely a year old. If the dog's teeth has yellowing on the back the dog may be between one and two years of age. If the tartar build-up is at a minimal level, you could have a dog between 3 and 5. Missing teeth or severe wear usually means the dog is a senior.

Another characteristic to check is the dog's muscle Tone. Younger dogs have some more noticeable muscle definition from their higher activity level. Older dogs are usually either a bit bonier or a little overweight from decreased activity.

Vet's also check out the dog's coat. A younger dog usually has a soft, fine coat. Older dog's have thicker, coarser fur. A senior dog may have some grays or patches of white. This coloring can be more evident around the canine's snout.

A final indication on an unknown dog's age is its eyes. Younger dog's have bright, clear eyes without tearing or discharge. Older dogs tend to have cloudy or opaque eyes.

These fun facts have now made you an expert on determining the rightful age of any canine you come across.
