The Keeshond, being a medium sized dog breed, measures fairly average in size compared to other breeds of dogs. This breed stands at about 17 to 18 inches tall and weighs in around 35 to 45 pounds. As part of the Spitz family, the Keeshond’s appearance is typical of that breed: very sturdily built and neither coarse nor refined. The Keeshond has a medium length muzzle with a definite stop, a wedge head shape, small pointed ears, and an extremely animated face. The tail of the Keeshond is tightly curled and is kept very close to its body.
The Spitz family breed specifically has a dense double coat and the Keeshond’s coat is no different. Its coat is thick and has a ruff around the neck. Most male dogs of this breed tend to have a thicker, more obvious ruff than females of this breed. The Keeshond has a very specific color of coat. The color tends to be a mix of cream, black, and gray. Usually, the top part of the coat is black tipped, while the under part of the coat is cream or silver. This type of coloring resembles that of a wolf. The Keeshond’s tail is very plumed and the fur on the fore and hind legs tends to feather out, giving it a soft look. The tail is usually seen in a silver or cream color with a black tip on the very end. The Keeshond’s ears and muzzle are generally black, yet occasionally, white shading around the front of the muzzle and nose is seen. This color variation tends to increase as the dog ages.
The Keeshond is a dog breed that encompassed many personality traits of the ideal housedog. This breed of dog is reasonably lively and playful. It is also an extremely attentive and affectionate housedog, making it a great companion for a child or adult. The Keeshond is always ready for an exciting adventure. However, on the other hand, this breed can be completely content in just relaxing and taking it easy. The Keeshond shows personality traits of sensitivity and fast learning skills. This breed of dog is overall very friendly, yet always has awareness for danger.
As an extremely lively breed, the Keeshond needs ample exercise to keep content. Daily moderate exercise such as a good walk on a leash along with an energetic game can keep this breed happy. The Keeshond can live in the outdoors in temperate to cool climates. However, since it is an exceptionally social and affectionate dog breed, the Keeshond prefers to share its time indoors with its family. This dog breed has a double coat and it needs brushing at least once or twice weekly, and even more often when shedding.
The Keeshond has a life span of twelve to fourteen years. This breed of dog is generally an extremely healthy breed and does not have any major health concerns. However, some of the more minor health concerns associated with this dog breed are CHD, epilepsy, and patellar lunation. Occasionally, renal cortical, hypoplasia, and tetralogy health concerns are seen in the Keeshond. Other health issues that have been known to sometimes occur in the Keeshond are hip dysplasia, Cushing’s disease, hyperparathyroidism, and hypothyroidism. As an owner, it is extremely important to get your dog tested for these health problems, allow him ample exercise, and feed him a healthy diet in order to keep him in the best shape possible.
Overall, it is obvious as to why the Keeshond is considered to be one of the most ideal house pets. With its friendly and playful personality, this breed of dog is perfect around small children and adults. The affection and compassion the Keeshond shows its family is hard to beat. Even with its playful and energetic characteristics, the Keeshond also knows how to relax and stay calm when necessary. With these desirable personality traits and its honest desire to protect its family, it is hard to think of any negative thoughts about the wonderful Keeshond breed.
