The Olde English Bulldogge ABKC Standards

This Olde English Bulldogge shows excellent confirmation and confidence in his stance. His bone structure and head piece are a great example of the breed standard. His hair coat and muzzle are also a great example of the American Bully Kennel Club breed standard.

The Olde English Bulldogge According to the ABKC (American Bully Kennel Club). The ABKC is known for representing the American Bullies, however they represent a number of other bully breeds as well.

The ABKC states the ideal Olde English Bulldogge is a courageous dog with a large powerful head along with a short, stout, and muscular frame. The Olde English Bulldogge is devoid of any breathing issues and are able to participate in outdoor activities without any problems. This excludes extreme hot or cold temperatures. The temperament of these dogs is stable. Meaning that they do not pose a threat to friends, family, or other dogs that are not aggressive. They make a loyal companion as well as a capable protector. This breed thrives to please their owner and is extremely trainable.

American Bully Kennel Club Breed Standards for the Bulldogge


Head: The head piece of the Olde English Bulldogge (Also known as the Old English Bulldog) is moderately sunken in and has a medial furrow. The circumference of the head should be the same size or greater than the dog's height at the withers. A narrow or small head is considered a fault.

Ears: The rose ears should sit well. Dropped ears are acceptable as long as they aren't large ears. Any ears that stand strait up is considered a fault.

Muzzle: The muzzle should be deep and short with moderate wrinkles. Normally with American Bullies (Descendants of the American Pit Bull Terrier) an undershot is considered a fault. However with the English Bulldog it is considered a breed standard. Muzzles longer than 3 inches, a scissor bite, or an even bite is a disqualification and considered a serious fault. A wry jaw is also a fault that is grounds for a disqualification.

Eyes: They should be wide apart. Any color is accepted however mismatched colors or eyes that lack pigment are not preferred. Bugged eyes are considered a fault. Crossed eyes or non symmetrical eyes are also disqualifying faults.

Nose: The Nose should be broad with open nostrils and should show no signs of air restriction. It shouldn't be pushed up between the eyes. It should be at least one and a half inches from the stop to the end of the nose. It should be a solid color. Any pigment missing is considered a fault. Any nose that doesn't have any pigment is a disqualifying fault.

Neck: The neck of the Bulldog should be short to medium length and should show nice muscle definition. It should flow to the shoulders and shouldn't be set so it appears that it stops at the dog's shoulders.

Chest. The chest of the bulldog should have the appearance of a wide, broad, and strong chest. Therefore, a hollow or narrow chest would be considered a serious fault. The broad chest of the bulldog should be one of the first things you notice when you see this breed.

Back: The back of the males should be square and balanced. Females should be the same, however you have to take into consideration the body length. They should appear to have a horse shoe shape to them. The back should be short with somewhat of a rise from the shouldered to a drop in the croup. A level back is also accepted as long as the tail doesn't come right off of the top of their backs.

Shoulders: Shoulders should be set back with angulations to allow for easy movement. Strait shoulders are considered a fault by the ABKC.

Legs: The forelegs of the bulldogge should be wide apart and strait down. Bowing or turning in opposite directions are not preferred. The bone should appear very thick. Elbows should be close to the body. Skinny legs that lack substance are not preferred. Loose elbows and strait legs are a fault. Cow hocks are a disqualification and considered a serious fault.

Movement: They should have a balanced gait that drives off of the rear end. When the dog walks it should show a sense of power in it's movement. The should walk in a single track. Any type of pacing or crabbing is a fault.

Feet: They should be round and tight on both the front and rear. Webbed toes that are separated is a fault that calls for disqualification.

The height and weight of the Olde English Bulldogge should be 18-20 inches, 65 - 85 lbs for males and 17 - 19 inches, 50 - 70 lbs for females. The height is measured at the withers (Shoulders). Scales are available at all show events to determine classes that the dogs participate in as well as to judge the breed standard.

The color should be any color except merle. Their hair coat is short, shiny with no signs of feathering on the legs or neck. Any feathering, wavy, or long coat is a disqualification.

Their tail should be a pump handle that reaches the hook naturally. Screwed short and docked tails are acceptable. If a puppy has a kinked tail, it would be recommended to dock it.

The dog's temperament is very similar to the American bully. They should be outgoing and playful. Also, they should have a natural guard dog instinct while on their property or in their home. Any sign of unprovoked human aggression should be considered a serious fault as it would with the American Bully as well. Extreme dog aggression should also be considered a serious fault.

Their back should be short from nose to tail. Higher rears are not desirable with medium size dogs. Also, high rears should be minimal with the extreme and XL size dogs.
