Rally obedience (Dog sport)

Getting Started in Rally Obedience. Rally is a dog sport where the rally judge created a course that the dog and handler must complete. The dog and handler complete the course by arriving at different stations. Each station will have a sign that shows the handler what skill has to be preformed. The scoring isn't as strict as the traditional obedience courses.

Both the handler and dog must move at a swift and steady pave with the dog under control on the handler's left side. There should be a sense of teamwork with both the handler and the canine during this event. However, perfect heel position isn't required while going through the course. Any call for a point deduction of one or more should be considered the same in rally as it would in traditional obedience courses (Unless noted otherwise in Rally regulations).
After the judge gives the "Forward" command, the team of both dog and handler are required to complete the sequence of number signs to the best of their ability.

There is no limit on how much communication you use when giving the dog commands unless noted otherwise in Rally Regulations. Handlers are permitted to clap hands, pat their leg, talk, praise, and encourage their dog while completing the tasks listed. Also, multiple hand signs and commands either using one hand or two are permitted. However, at no time can the handler touch the dog or make any kind of physical correction. If at any time any harsh corrections (Screaming, yelling, or showing signs of intimidating signals) points will be deducted.

Rally Obedience should be a fun dog sport that both the dog and owner enjoy at all different levels of competition. This is a new dog sport that has been gaining much attention in the dog world over the past few years. While there a number of sports available for owners and canines to participate in, Rally Obedience offers a sport that tests both the dog's mind and body alike. Rally obedience signs

Rally obedience signs are the signs that the judge posts for the owner to read. Once read they will know the command to give to the dog during the competition. These signs come in all colors and included a description as well as arrows showing the direction of exercises. Each rally obedience sign is numbered to make it easy to navigate through the course. All signs are placed on the right side of the handler and are large enough to easily recognize throughout the course that the judge sets up. Each exercise listed on the sign should be preformed close to the actual sign itself. This will be preformed either behind, beside (either side) or in the front of the rally obedience sign.

How to find out if you are eligible to participate in this dog sport.

In order to be eligible to participate in AKC rally trials, your dog must be:

At least 6 months of age or older
Must be a foundation stock service prerecorded dog breed (Also known as FSS)
listed within the AKC Canine Partner Program
Also listed within the AKC Purebred Alternative Listing. This is also known as the indefinite listing privilege program (PAL/ILP)
Your dog must also be registered with the AKC
